Sports Day =D

Sports Day is a tradition in Maktab Sains. I can't see any obvious pattern as to when they are held except Sports Day usually takes place in April. This year, our Sports Day was on Thurday, 22nd April while last year, it was held on my birthday in 23rd April. :D The Sports Day was held in Stadium Balapan.

Pierre de Coubertin believed that competiting in Sports contributes to a more peaceful world because we need teamwork, to win. There are four teams in Maktab Sains which are Panglima :D, Pahlawan, Hulubalang and Laksamana. Athletes, both teachers and students and Performers practised tirelessly for weeks. Preparations were made by the MS ''orchestra'' for the singing of the National Anthem and the College Song and by the P.E Department and a few selected classes for the Aerobics in the beginning of Sports Day. After that, there's the March Pass by representatives of the four following teams and the Field Performance. Then, the athletes compete. Most students don't pay attention to the events, instead they were with friends. =p

This is probably why I love Sports Selections. Everyone were given the chance to compete with their teamates. For the first time, this year in 2010 our Sports Selection took place at our very own field. *clap* :) A lot of students complained about it at first but it was actually fun! (Better than Balapan... At least, I thought so... That was probably due to who I was with. ;D)

For 2010, the champion is Pahlawan. Congratulations Pahlawan! :) For Field Performance, Panglima has been the champion for 2009 and 2010. Congratulations Panglima! :D I'm a Panglima, so I hope in the future, Panglima can be no.1 for both the events and the field performance. So to all MS Panglimas, be ready to take the competition by a storm next year! :D

Events:

Field Events: Jouvelin, Shotput, Long Jump

Running Events: 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 100 x 4 metres

Cheers: :D

Panglima:
We're Panglima,
We're the Best,
We will strive among the rest,
One, Two, PANGLIMA!
Three, Four, PANGLIMA!
Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! PANGLIMA!

Pahlawan:
Go Pahlawan!
Go! Go! Pahlawan!
Go Pahlawan!
Go! Go! Pahlawan!

Hulubalang:
Who let the dogs out,
Hu... Hulu... HULUBALANG!
Who let the dogs out,
Hu... Hulu... HULUBALANG!

Laksamana:
We are the B-E-S-T. BEST!
Among the R-E-S-T. REST!
We are the best among the rest!
We are the B-E-S-T. BEST!
LAKSAMANA!

Fundraising and Awaraness Week

Ms environmental club has organized FUNDRAISING AND AWARENESS WEEK. It was launched on the 8th April and ended on the 13th April. There were magic shows, booths and exhibitions on the opening ceremony day. The opening ceremony took place in the auditorium. Maktab Sains is the first school in brunei to bring up this project! The club mentioned that the teachers and students have to bring their own eating utensils every Thursday from 11.30 am to 2 pm. They named it BRING-YOUR-OWN. Environmental club will rent eating utensils to those who forgot BUT they’ll charge them 10 cents per cent! It’s better to bring our own, right?  This is to reduce the use of plastics and Styrofoam in the school. They also planned to conduct more like this in the next term, two days a week. In teacher Rodziah’s speech, the teacher in charge, they are raising funds for recycle bins for each class. As a result, they have raised $300. She also hoped that teachers and students will make use the current recycle bins. The others that helped in organizing this project were Project V, Entrepreneurial club, Energy club, and economics students of PRA-U2. So BE FANTASTIC, USE LESS PLASTIC!

MSPSBS and PTE Katok to vie for national debate championship

The Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan debate team arguing against free markets as a solution to the current economic crisis.

Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan and Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTE Katok) both qualified for the finals of the 14th Brunei Darussalam International English Debating Competition 2010 beating Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah and Sayyidina Ali Secondary School respectively.
The semi-finals, held yesterday at Maktab Sains, demonstrated the oratory and debating prowess of the participants from all four schools. Issues debated between PTE Katok and Sayyidina Ali dealt with whether wealth should be redistributed, while Maktab Sains argued against free markets as a solution to the current economic crisis in a heated debate with Maktab Duli.

“(The debate) was intense,” said 17-year-old Raihan Nabilah from Maktab Sains.

“We lost to Maktab Duli in the preliminaries so this victory was quite a big deal for us especially since we’re the host school.

“We’ve never gone against this particular team from PTE Katok before and we’re really looking forward to it. They’re tough but I know we can do it. Although we have the short end of the stick as far as the motion goes but we’ll still try our best,” she added enthusiastically.

Meanwhile, Jarrod Sim from PTE Katok was equally satisfied with their performance that afternoon.

“We’re ecstatic,” he told the Bulletin. “We started working on this a little late because we took a bit of a break after the preliminaries and after getting the motion we were worried because we couldn’t find a direction.

“But we pulled through and we worked every day,” he proudly said. PTE Katok also lost to their opponent in the preliminaries and came out victorious in the semi-finals.

The two qualifying schools will now vie for the national debate championship on May 4, this year, arguing whether eco-tourism does indeed benefit local tourism.

MSPSBS Geography week

Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan played host to Brunei’s Polar Girl, Najibah Eradah Sufri yesterday, as she revealed her inspiring story of being the first Bruneian to set foot on the South Pole to hundreds of students. The event was in conjunction with Geography week, which aims to boost students’ interest in the subject.
